SAN FRANCISCO — To snap out of a concerning downward spiral that saw seven straight series losses, a Giants team built to win as a collective needed a few individuals to step out and lead.A rookie home debut. A near-no-hitter. An impassioned speech. It took all these things to dig the Giants out of a slump and rolling into a crucial series victory against the Cincinnati Reds. The Giants lost their potential series sweeper, 4-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Oracle Park. Logan Webb allowed two runs on seven hits with six strikeouts in his outing. It was no biggie: The Giants began this series a half-game back of the Arizona Diamondbacks for the third wild card spot, the Reds 1.5 games back of them, and ended it tied with the Diamondbacks for the third spot with Cincinnati one game back of them. Baby steps.“They shut us down (today),” manager Gabe Kapler said. “But the momentum from the last several games hasn’t changed.”The Giants were struggling when t...Windows shattered in several parked vehicles in Nob Hill: photos

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Tommy Edman has something in common with Albert Pujols.Edman hit a two-run homer off Josh Hader in the ninth for his second walk-off hit in two days off the All-Star closer, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat San Diego 5-4 on Wednesday.“He’s just got such a good fastball,” Edman said. “Just trying to stay as short as I possibly could and got to try to stay on top of it, just because that fastball is pretty explosive. So, it’s trying to not do too much and it’s fun when you accidentally hit a homer.”Edman became the first Cardinals player with consecutive walk-off RBIs since Pujols against the Chicago Cubs on June 4-5, 2011.“The best part is just seeing your teammates surrounding home as you’re rounding third base,” Edman said. “And just the feeling of being able to come through for your guys. We fought all day.”St. Louis trailed 4-3 before Masyn Winn doubled off Hader (0-3) with two outs in the ninth and Edman sliced a sinker to the opposite field and into the Cardina...Lions favored to win NFC North, hoping to end 3-decade drought without a division title

DETROIT LIONS (9-8)EXPECTATIONS: Playoffs?! Yes. Detroit is favored to win the NFC North, hoping to end a three-decade drought without a division title. The Lions haven’t been in the playoffs since 2016 and have only one postseason victory since winning the 1957 NFL title. With a potent offense and improved defense, one of the league’s historically bad franchises is expected to have success. Detroit closed last season with eight wins in its last 10 games and had a winning season for the first time since 2017, then addressed needs in free agency and the draft to generate relatively high hopes. Coach Dan Campbell said the hype was out of control entering training camp. When season tickets were sold out later in the summer for the first time in two-plus decades at Ford Field, Campbell said he felt “wind underneath my freaking wings.” NEW FACES: RB David Montgomery, RB Jahmyr Gibbs, WR Marvin Jones, TE Sam LaPorta, CB Cameron Sutton, DB C.J. Something interesting: Stephen Colbert has in his possession a pair of pants belonging to the late Nicaraguan dictator, Anastasio Somoza. It’s a long story but his mom dated Somoza when she was younger (before he became a dictator, says Colbert). Speaking of pants, Jimmy Kimmel once bought a pair of Gary Coleman’s pants off eBay.These are just two of the wonderfully weird factoids shared by late-night hosts Colbert, Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, John Oliver and Seth Meyers, in a new podcast called “Strike Force Five” — named after their personal text chain — which debuted Wednesday on Spotify.Because their respective shows have been dark since the Writers Guild of America went on strike in May, all profits from the podcast will go to their respective staffs. The show is sponsored by Mint Mobile and liquor company Diageo, and Kimmel said the money will “largely” come from them. Kimmel served as the inaugural moderator and that responsibility will be shared among the hosts.“...Remains of Vermont World War II soldier are buried at Arlington National Cemetery
