The Warriors were in need of a backup point guard option with Steph Curry and Chris Paul expected to miss at least a handful of games next season for load management. The Warriors signed Cory Joseph to a one-year veteran minimum contract as the third point guard option off the bench, sources confirmed to this news organization.Joseph, 31, will fill the third string point guard job previously held by two-way player Ty Jerome, who signed a two-year contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Warriors had extended Jerome a qualifying offer, but decided not to match Cleveland’s offer. At 6-foot-5, Joseph is a taller point guard who plays a more traditional point guard role as a distributor and strong point-of-attack defender. As second apron luxury tax violators, the Warriors can only hand out veteran minimum contracts to free agents such as Joseph, who will earn approximately $3 million as a 12-year NBA veteran.Joseph has played for five NBA teams, including the San Antonio Spurs f...

Both the monthly number of violent crimes and the total number of violent crimes to date are rising in 2023. Typically, cities see a rise in violent crime during the summer months, something long-time residents Robert and Karen Tebaldi said doesn’t surprise them. “The hotter the weather, the higher the crime,” Robert Tebaldi said. “Things we haven’t seen we’re seeing these last couple of years,” Karen Tebaldi added. Crusita Ceballos and Flor Gonzales said it seems like something every weekend. "We’re Colorado natives, so we’ve been here forever,” Ceballos said. “Crime wise it has kind of gotten worse ov...

The politics of the French riots

John Lichfield is a former foreign editor of the Independent and was the newspaper’s Paris correspondent for 20 years.Beware of those who offer a simple explanation of the riots that have exploded in multi-racial suburbs across France. These are not, for the most part, political riots — although they are influenced by, and will dangerously inflame, the poisonously divided politics of France. They are not religious riots. Many of the very young rioters may have a sense of besieged Muslim identity, but they are driven by  anger rather than their religion. This is an insurrection, not an intifada. They are not, properly speaking, truly race riots. The great majority of the many millions of hard-working residents of the racially mixed suburbs which surround French cities are not involved.Rather, they are the main victims of the destruction of cars, buses, trams, schools, libraries, shops and social centers which began after a 17-year-old boy was shot dead by a traffic cop in Nan...

Security for Ukraine — but how?

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 09:18:16 GMT

In its sixteenth month, the war rages on in Ukraine with no end in sight, making the question of longer-term security guarantees ever more urgent. And at the upcoming NATO summit in Lithuania, the issue of Ukraine’s membership will be on the agenda. Since Russia’s attack, the once popular idea of seeing Ukraine as a bridge between East and West has been buried — buried for good. And with Ukraine abandoning its earlier goal of neutrality some years ago, the country has made joining NATO a constitutional objective. In 2008, Ukraine, along with Georgia, received a promise from the alliance that it would become a member — a promise made without a clear roadmap or timetable. But while almost everyone agrees that simply a mantra-like repetition of the 2008 promise won’t do justice to the current situation, the question remains, how can and should Ukraine’s security be strengthened? And what exactly should the NATO summit communique in Vilnius say? By now, there is con...

Northeastern University helping to design revolutionary new robot

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 09:18:16 GMT

Northeastern University researchers are helping to develop a revolutionary robot design that could someday help astronauts explore space. The researchers are teaming up with Cal Tech to design a robot called M4 in a project that is funded by NASA.The M4 is a new shapeshifting robot that can drive, flip, fly, and may someday end up in space. It has 8 different ways of moving, from crawling to taking flight.Northeastern Assistant Professor Alireza Ramwzani said the project was partly inspired by studying the way animals move and that the M4 can be useful both here on Earth and in outer space. Researchers are working on a way to equip the M4 with the latest AI tech.“We can find many robotic applications from space to package delivery,” he said.
