Top GOP lawmakers negotiating a debt ceiling compromise with the White House on Friday cut the talks short, signaling at least a temporary breakdown in the process as the clock ticks toward an imminent default. The Republicans left a meeting with White House officials in the Capitol saying the two sides remained too far apart to continue the in-person discussion and accusing the White House of being “unreasonable.”Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) arrived at the Capitol after talks had broken down and said the White House was simply not willing to accept spending cuts at the levels Republicans are insisting upon."We've got to get movement by the White House, and we don't have any movement yet. So, yeah, we've gotta pause," McCarthy said. "Yesterday I really felt we were at the location where I could see the path. The White House is just — look, we can't be spending more money next year. We have to spend less than we spent the year before. It's pretty easy."Rep. Garret Gra...Biden tells G-7 leaders US will support effort to train Ukrainian pilots on F-16s

AUSTIN (KXAN) — As the one-year anniversary of the mass shooting in Uvalde approaches, a bill that would end a controversial legal loophole used to block victims and families from seeing important records is the closest its ever been to closing. The “dead suspect loophole” refers to an exemption in Texas’ public records law that gives police discretion to withhold information in criminal cases that haven’t gone through the court process — even when a suspect dies in police custody.“There’s no greater need for the people to know the truth then when an interaction with their government leaves one of them dead,” said State Rep. Joe Moody, D-El Paso, at a hearing earlier this month. He filed House Bill 30 and has been pushing for years to close the loophole, which is blocking Uvalde families from getting answers.“Law enforcement refused to release those [Uvalde] records,” Moody previously said. “And, we all knew very well that they never had to release them, ever, because of th...Mohawk man arrested for alleged sexual exploitation

Jefferson City resident John Goad reeled in a 5-ounce longear sunfish on May 8 on Frieda Lake in Crawford County. The Missouri Department of Conservation says most fish of this species aren't larger than seven inches or 4.5 ounces. The previous state record was caught on a private pond in Franklin County in July 2021. Road rage fight sends 73-year-old man to hospital with life-threatening injuries “I’ve been fishing this lake for around 10 years, and I’ve caught crappie, bass, bluegill – all pretty good sizes,” said Goad via MDC. “But I’ve known there are good-sized sunfish for about seven or eight years, and I’ve been trying to catch a record ever since.”Goad says he was five years old when he caught his first longear sunfish and has been striving to catch a state record for 70 years.Latest news
