Bill to close 'dead suspect loophole' heads to final Senate vote

AUSTIN (KXAN) — As the one-year anniversary of the mass shooting in Uvalde approaches, a bill that would end a controversial legal loophole used to block victims and families from seeing important records is the closest its ever been to closing.The “dead suspect loophole” refers to an exemption in Texas’ public records law that gives police discretion to withhold information in criminal cases that haven’t gone through the court process — even when a suspect dies in police custody.“There’s no greater need for the people to know the truth then when an interaction with their government leaves one of them dead,” said State Rep. Joe Moody, D-El Paso, at a hearing earlier this month. Andrew Edick allegedly videotaped the genital region of a child and shared the recording on social media in August 2022. MECHANICVILLE, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Mechanicville Police Department arrested a Stillwater man after an occurance of shots being fired. Kevin Masterson, 51, is facing multiple charges. CRAWFORD COUNTY, Mo. - A Mid-Missouri man matched a state record with his longear sunfish catch from earlier this month. Jefferson City resident John Goad reeled in a 5-ounce longear sunfish on May 8 on Frieda Lake in Crawford County. The Missouri Department of Conservation says most fish of this species aren't larger than seven inches or 4.5 ounces. The previous state record was caught on a private pond in Franklin County in July 2021. KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A man died after reportedly shooting at Kansas City police officers and triggering a standoff in a Westside neighborhood near West 17th and West Pennway streets Thursday night into overnight Friday. The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating after KCPD officers initially went to the scene at about 11:30 p.m. Thursday for reports of a man who was firing a gun.The highway patrol says when officers arrived that man fired shots inside a residence and then fired in proximity of the officers, who shot back. The suspect wasn't hit and retreated. A SWAT team responded and the standoff began.After negotiations for a surrender started around 12:30 a.m., investigators say the man began shooting at officers again, who returned fire, striking and killing the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
